3 Days Desert Tour from Fez to Merzouga
Itinerary
Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Erfoud – Merzouga
Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your accommodation in Fez, heading south through the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine-style architecture and clean atmosphere, followed by a visit to the cedar forests near Azrou where Barbary macaques can often be seen in their natural habitat. Continuing through winding mountain roads, you will reach Midelt for a relaxing lunch break before descending toward the south, where the landscape gradually transforms into arid beauty. In the afternoon, you will pass through the spectacular Ziz Valley, known for its vast palm groves and panoramic viewpoints, before crossing the desert gateway towns of Erfoud and Rissani. By late afternoon or early evening, you will arrive in Merzouga, where you will settle into a comfortable hotel or kasbah near the dunes and enjoy dinner in a peaceful desert atmosphere.
Day 2: Merzouga – Desert Exploration – Camel Trek – Camp Experience
After breakfast, the day is dedicated to exploring the wonders of the Sahara Desert around Erg Chebbi, starting with an off-road 4×4 excursion across the golden dunes and surrounding desert landscapes. Along the way, you will visit nomadic Berber families living in traditional tents, where you will be welcomed with tea and gain insight into their unique lifestyle, followed by a stop in the village of Khamlia to experience the captivating rhythms of Gnawa music. After enjoying lunch and some relaxation time at your accommodation, the highlight of the day begins in the late afternoon with a camel trek into the heart of the dunes, offering breathtaking views as the sun sets over the vast Sahara. Upon arrival at your desert camp, you will be greeted with traditional hospitality, followed by a delicious dinner and an evening of Berber music and drumming under a sky full of stars, creating a truly magical and unforgettable experience.
Day 3: Merzouga – Midelt – Ifrane – Fez
On the final day, you will have the opportunity to wake up early and witness a spectacular sunrise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a peaceful and unforgettable moment in the heart of the desert. After breakfast at the camp, you will return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4, where your journey back to Fez begins. Traveling once again through the diverse landscapes of southern Morocco, you will pass by Erfoud and the lush Ziz Valley, with a stop in Midelt for lunch before continuing through Ifrane. By early evening, you will arrive back in Fez, where you will be dropped off at your accommodation, marking the end of your unforgettable Sahara desert adventure.
